Tsunamis

In relation to Key Stage 3 Geography, Tsunamis are studied as part of understanding tectonic plates, volcanoes, earthquakes, and other movement of the ocean floor. Students learn that tsunamis can cause significant damage when they reach shallow waters near the shore. Some key aspects include understanding what tsunamis are, how they are caused, effects of tsunamis, and responses to tsunami warnings and events.

This KS3 Tsunamis module will enable students to:

  • Define what tsunamis are and how they are different from regular waves.
  • Understand how tsunamis are formed.
  • Explain how seismic activity can generate tsunamis.
  • Describe how tsunamis impact coastal areas.
  • Know how people are warned of incoming tsunamis.
  • Understand how people have responded to tsunamis and how they are preparing for tsunamis that may strike in the future.
