South America Place Studies

South America is a significant area of study in the KS3 Geography curriculum. This module aims to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the geographical features — both physical and human — of South America. As the fourth largest continent in the world, South America offers exciting examples of diverse landscapes, including mountains, rainforests, deserts, and coastal regions. Students will explore the continent’s climate patterns, natural hazards (such as earthquakes, volcanic activity, and tropical storms), and unique ecosystems.

From a human geography perspective, South America is home to a rich cultural tapestry. Students will delve into the history, languages, traditions, and indigenous peoples of the continent. They’ll also examine urbanization trends, population distribution, and the challenges faced by rapidly growing cities.

This KS3 South America Place Studies module will enable students to:

  • Describe South America’s physical geography, climate, landforms, and natural features
  • Describe South America’s human geography, people, ethnic origins, and cultures
  • Familiarize themselves with how diverse South America is
  • Get to know Brazil as a rapidly developing country
  • Understand the ecological significance of the Amazon
  • Know the positive and negative effects of urbanization in Brazil
