Africa Place Studies
In KS3 Geography, studying Africa is essential for several educations and developmental reasons, helping students to gain a well-rounded understanding of the world. These reasons include the sheer diversity of the continent. Africa has vast physical diversity like deserts and rainforests, to savannas and mountains. In terms of cultural diversity, the continent is home to over a billion people who speak over 2,000 languages, and practice a variety of religious and cultural traditions, making it a rich case study to explore human geography, population distribution, and the influence of culture on lifestyle.
Africa also has global significance that is important for KS3 students to explore. There's the undeniable historical importance, from ancient civilisations to colonialism and decolonialism. Not to forget the diversity of economic and developmental statuses of different countries across the continent that make for fascinating studies on the interconnectedness of the world, vital discussions on globalisation and development, as well as the roles and responsibilities associated with climate change and sustainability.
This KS3 Africa Place Studies module will enable students to:
- Describe Africa’s physical geography, climate, landforms, and natural features.
- Debunk common myths, misconceptions, and generalisations about Africa.
- Get to know Kenya’s climate, notable landforms, and the Maasai people.
- Understand the geological processes that led to the creation of the Rift Valley in Kenya.
- Know what MPESA is and how it has changed the lives of people in Kenya.
