Physical Geography: Waterfalls

The study of waterfalls is part of Key Stage 3 geography curriculum. This topic provides an engaging way for students to explore the dynamic processes that shape the natural world and have created some amazing landmarks in the process. In terms of physical geography, the study of waterfalls is not only fascinating, but an exciting exploration of broader geographical concepts such as river systems, rock composition and characteristics, as well as forces of erosion that include chemical and physical forms. Additionally, the study of waterfalls offers insights into the interconnectedness of landforms, such as gorges and plunge pools, which are created by the movement of water.

Through this module, students can understand what makes waterfalls not just stunning features, but unique - including their vertical drop, water flow, and surrounding features. Students can explore how waterfalls differ in terms of shape, size and flow rate, and the factors that influence these differences. The investigation of how water and rock types lead to the creation of waterfalls is an exciting learning opportunity that covers hydraulic action, abrasion, and erosion. Through studying iconic examples from around the world, students will be able to explain what makes each one distinct.

By delving into the physical geography of waterfalls, students gain a deeper understanding of natural processes and the ecological significance they have on local ecosystems, and for cultural, spiritual, and economic importance for nearby communities.

This KS3 Physical Geography: Waterfalls module will enable students to:

  • Define the characteristics of waterfalls
  • Explain how waterfalls vary in terms of shape, size, and flow rate
  • Explain how waterfalls form based on the flow of water on rocks
  • Cite examples of famous waterfalls around the world
  • Explain the ecological and cultural significance of waterfalls
