Tundra Ecosystem
In the study of tundra ecosystems for KS3 level, students get to know the general characteristics of tundra biomes that can be found in regions like Alaska, Finland and Siberia, for example. Important elements of these ecosystems, such as soil, permafrost, plant life, animal life, and human presence in these ecosystems create a picture of the adaptations required to survive in this extreme environment.
This KS3 Ecosystems: Tundra module will enable students to:
- Define what a tundra is and know how it differs from other biomes.
- Know the different features that characterise a tundra biome.
- Know the difference between arctic and alpine tundras.
- Know where arctic and alpine tundras can be found.
- Understand how biotic and abiotic factors interact in tundra environments.
- Recognise different tundra landforms and know how the freeze-thaw process forms them.
