Physical Geography: Hot Deserts

At Key Stage 3 (KS3) in geography, students get the chance to learn about the extreme environment of the hot desert. It provides an exciting opportunity to explore human, animal and plant adaptations to the extreme temperatures, as well as global environment issues that impact this sensitive ecosystem.

When examining hot deserts from an environmental point of view, students get to learn about climate characteristics, such as arid conditions, extreme temperatures, and low rainfall. These all tie together to develop an understanding of how climate affects landscapes. Hot deserts are also home to some amazing geographical features. By studying sand dunes, rocky plateaus, and wadis, students gain a deeper understanding of physical geography concepts like erosion, weathering, and deposition.

From a Human geography perspective, hot deserts requires a lot of adaptations not just to survive but grow economically. Exploring Indigenous communities showcase resilience, survival in seeming scarcity, and the importance of traditional knowledge. From a modern perspective, exploring hot desert regions allows students to understand how cities like Las Vegas, or Dubai manage their water scarcity and demonstrate human innovation in extreme environments.

Hot deserts allow students to better understand environmental challenges and sustainability. Desertification is a serious problem affecting many countries around the world. Students can discover how hot deserts expand due to climate change and unsustainable human activities that affect agriculture, livelihoods, and even conflict risk. By exploring case studies like Libya's Great Man Made River, students get real-world exposure to the importance of sustainable water use.

This KS3 Physical Geography: Hot Deserts module will enable students to:

  • Describe the characteristics of hot deserts
  • Understand how biotic and abiotic factors interact in a hot desert
  • Understand how plants and animals have adapted to life in hot deserts.
  • Know where hot deserts are found in the globe.
  • Identify landforms found in hot deserts.
  • Know how environmental issues impact hot deserts.
  • Understand how human activity impacts hot desert environments.
