Weather and Climate

The study of Weather and Climate at the KS3 level focuses on helping students understand the differences between short-term atmospheric conditions (weather) and long-term patterns (climate). Students will learn to distinguish between the two and explore the various factors that influence them, such as temperature, air pressure, and geographical location.

Through the lens of Geographical Issues and Challenges, students will examine how the sun’s energy drives the global climate system, creating zones of varying temperatures due to uneven heating of the Earth’s surface. This leads to the formation of global atmospheric circulation patterns and the development of high- and low-pressure systems that affect local and regional weather.

By studying these concepts, students gain a deeper understanding of Earth’s dynamic atmospheric systems and develop the skills to interpret weather patterns and climate trends. They also foster a greater awareness of how these factors impact daily life and long-term planning.

This KS3 Weather and Climate module will enable students to:

  • Differentiate weather from climate, and describe the factors that influence both
  • Describe how the sun’s energy is a global climate driver
  • Describe the different zones generated by uneven heating of the Earth
  • Describe atmospheric circulation as a result of uneven heating of the Earth
  • Differentiate high-pressure and low-pressure systems
  • Define an air mass and give examples in the UK
  • Define a microclimate and the factors that influence the formation of one
  • Understand weather and climate better through a case study of the UK
