Earthquakes

The study of earthquakes is an important part of the KS3 geography curriculum. Students learn what an earthquake is, which is sudden, violent shaking of the ground when two tectonic plates push together and the pressure of these plates builds up inside the Earth's crust. Following this basic understanding, students then learn about epicentres, seismic waves, the effects of earthquakes like property and infrastructure damage, and tsunami risks, and, most importantly, how we can reduce the effects of earthquakes and risk to life through planning, predicting, and preparing.

This KS3 Earthquakes module will enable students to:

  • Define earthquakes and know the basics of seismic activity
  • Know what seismic waves are and how they cause ground movement
  • Understand plate tectonics and their relation to earthquakes
  • Tell apart the different plate boundaries
  • Know how earthquakes affect different areas
  • Understand what people do before and after an earthquake
