Settlements
The KS3 geography curriculum includes a module on settlement studies, where students explore the patterns and significance of human habitation, from villages to cities. They learn about the different types of settlements— urban, rural, and suburban —and their functions, sizes, and distribution, influenced by factors like accessibility and resources. Students examine how settlements connect to natural resources, fostering growth and sustainability, while also exploring the cultural diversity and migration trends within them. Urbanization is a key focus, with insights into population density and the challenges faced by cities. Through global comparisons, students analyze disparities, development, and the impact of globalization on settlements.
This KS3 Settlements module will enable students to:
- Understand what settlements are and what their different functions are
- Examine the criteria that determine when a town becomes a city
- Understand the historical development of settlements
- Describe the factors that have influenced the growth, layout, location, functions, and sustainability of settlements
- Describe how urban areas adapt to cope with extreme environments
