Global Development Patterns

A well-rounded KS3 geography curriculum includes a module on global development patterns, because the topic is essential for helping students understand the inequalities, challenges, and opportunities that exist across the world. It allows students to engage with key geographical, social, and economic concepts that shape the modern world. These include exploring inequality and difference in development on levels such as wealth, income, and standard of living. They also explore indicators of development through metrics such as life expectancy, education levels, and income.

By learning about global development patterns, students are able to create thematic links to key geographical concepts, such as place, space, and interdependence, the influence of globalisation, and how spatial patterns impact development. It's an exciting opportunity to explore environmental and sustainability issues, while challenging students to think critically and ethically when it comes to linking geography, history, and economics.

This KS3 Global Development Patterns module will enable students to:​

• Define development and its different types
• Know the factors that influence the level of development in different regions
• Know how different methods and indicators are used to measure the level of development in countries
• Know how certain organisations measure a country’s development 
• Understand the impacts of transnational corporations on a country’s development
• Explore why disparity and inequality exist between countries.
