Geographic Information Systems

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are an integral part of KS3 geography curriculum in the UK. GIS are computer systems that allow users to analyse and display geographically referenced information, which can be used to study patterns and trends. These skills allow students to develop a deeper understanding of geographical processes, and how to interpret various sources of information. It can also be used to analyse spatial data, create maps, and perform analyses.

This KS3 Geographic Information Systems module will enable students to:

  • Define Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and explain how information and data are represented, analyzed, and visualized using technology
  • Identify the components of GIS, from data input to data output
  • Identify the methods of collecting geographical data using technology
  • Think of real-world applications of GIS in geography
  • Understand the important role of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in enhancing geographical research and analysis
