Conflict

The study of conflict at the KS3 level focuses on helping students understand how disagreements, competition or struggles for resources, land and power can create geographical challenges and issues. They will learn that the factors that contribute to conflict can occur between different groups of people, between countries, or even between people and the environment. Areas of study include resource conflicts for things like water, land, oil and energy; environmental conflict, such as deforestation causing conflict with indigenous people, and climate change where natural disasters force people to migrate; territorial disputes can be brought about by regions or countries arguing over where borders should be drawn, as well as migration and refugees causing tensions and pressure on resources. Conflict can also take the form of urban conflict, whereby social inequality can cause conflicts in cities or lower income areas for resources like housing, healthcare and education. Gentrification also forms an aspect of urban conflict, whereby wealthy people move into poorer areas, thus pushing out the original residents because of rising prices.

This KS3 Conflict module will enable students to:

  • Identify key political, economic, social, and cultural causes of conflict
  • Assess the effects of conflict on people, economies, and environments
  • Examine how political regimes and conflicts influence social groups
  • Evaluate the impact of conflict on human rights and social structures
  • Explore how communities develop resilience and recovery strategies
  • Review how aid and local efforts support post-conflict recovery and development
