Ecosystems: Deciduous Forests

In botany, deciduous means “falling off at maturity” and “tending to fall off”. Deciduous trees are trees that lose their leaves every year, and have leaves that change colour, depending on the season. They exist in contrast to evergreen trees, with leaves that are never shed off, and have leaves that are always green.

This GCSE Ecosystems module introduces deciduous forests to your students, explaining:

  • What is the meaning of deciduous?
  • Why do leaves change color and fall off in these plants?
  • What are deciduous forests? What are its characteristics?
  • What are the two types of deciduous forests?
  • What is the importance of deciduous forests?
  • What are the threats to deciduous forests?
  • What are sustainable ways that can preserve deciduous forests?
