Natural Hazards: Tectonic Hazards

The crust (oceanic and continental) and the upper mantle form a rigid shell at the Earth’s surface known as the lithosphere. It is broken into different fragments, which are called tectonic plates. The meeting of two plates is known as plate margin. Scientists are still exploring how and what exactly makes tectonic plates move. There is different evidence that these are moving (i.e. GPS measurements).

This GCSE Natural Hazards module introduces tectonic hazards to your students, explaining:

  • What constitutes the Earth’s structure?
  • How do certain physical processes result in earthquakes and volcanic eruptions?
  • Why and how do tectonic plates move?
  • Where are these plate margins located and how does it affect the occurrence of earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in certain areas around the world?
